We all know it’s not easy to lose weight and trying to get rid of fat is even harder.  However, the hardest thing is to stay slim and keep the weight off.

The Reshape concept is a long-term program that changes your eating habits and reshapes your body, without starving yourself or having the feeling that you have to deprive yourself of food. You can easily integrate the concept into your everyday life, and therefore achieve and maintain your desired weight in the long-term.

To realise how the Reshape concept works, we need to understand how hormones like insulin and leptin interact.  An imbalance of these hormones can be the reason that our bodies are trapped in this vicious cycle leading to weight gain and the overeating mode.  Crazy but true!  Often we have eaten enough food and yet still want to eat more. The two hormones, which are leptin and insulin, play an important role with regard to helping us maintain our weight.

Leptin is found in our fat cells and its job is to tell our brain when we are full and satisfied after we have eaten.

When you eat more food, the leptin levels increase and your brain interprets that you have eaten enough, activating your metabolism, which in turn makes you feel better and full of energy.

Consequently, if you eat less food than your body needs, (i.e. after a snack) your leptin levels decrease and your brain interprets as “starvation” prompting the desire to eat more.  The consequences of this are that your metabolism slows down, you feel sluggish, hungry and moody.

So how is it that people who are overweight remain overweight when their leptin levels are so high? Are they not constantly full and have to stop eating? Unfortunately, it’s not that easy.  Although the level of leptin in the body increases, the leptin cannot bind to the receptors in the brain, as the brain does not recognise the signals. Therefore, their appetite cannot be curbed, nor can their metabolism be increased and it is as if the brain is “starving” while the body is “getting fat”.

Insulin

Every time you eat food, containing glucose, insulin is produced in your pancreas – its major function is to maintain low blood-glucose levels. Glucose is found in foods such as white bread, pasta and potatoes, also known as carbohydrates. You need to know that sugar is the smallest form of carbohydrate, which you will find in these foods.  Eating carbohydrates make the glucose levels rise, releasing insulin into the bloodstream. This then travels through the bloodstream collecting the glucose and transporting it to the muscles and liver cells to be used as energy. Any surplus energy (glucose) is then converted to fat and stored as reserves.

Leptin and insulin work in conjunction with each other and when the insulin is produced, the fat cells are activated to produce leptin.

The VICIOUS CIRCLE Begins!

If you continually eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrate-rich foods, your pancreas is permanently releasing insulin, which is carried to your muscles and liver, with any excess converted into fat.  At the same time, leptin is being released by your fat cells, which is confusing your brain, as it is being constantly bombarded with the signals from the food you are eating.  It now cannot tell that you are full and satisfied, so your metabolism drops, despite having enough reserves, and your body craves more food.
